PRODUCT REVIEW & GIVEAWAY - SmartShield Serious Sun Protection [CLOSED!]

Hiya Lovelies!

I can't overemphasize the importance of using sun-protection DAILY. There are so many myths surrounding sunscreen/sunblock around these parts and I'm just gonna start this post by addressing a few:
  • It makes you dark(er) - FALSE
  • You don't need to use it if you're not going to be exposed to direct sunlight - FALSE
  • Only ladies need sunscreen - FALSE
  • (and the craziest of them all): Only caucasians or light-skinned people need to use sunscreen -FALSE FALSE FALSE!!!
Sunscreen is necessary for EVERYBODY regardless of your race, skin tone, gender etc. and even if you aren't going to be exposed to direct sunlight, still wear some sunscreen, even if its just on your face. Most makeup products/foundations have got SPF in them, especially MAC products. All my foundations from MAC have got SPF, these include MatchMaster, Pro Longwear and StudioFix Liquid foundations, to name a few.

Skin Cancers are caused by damage from the sun's Ultra Violet (UV) rays and protecting your skin from the sun can help prevent these cancers. It is true that people with dark/black skin are less likely to get skin cancer as darker skin has some protection against UV rays, BUT skin cancer can STILL occur, so sunscreen is still necessary.

SmartShield Serious Sun Protection* is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the official sunscreen for the US Army and Navy, it was specially formulated for harsh weather conditions like in Afghanistan, Iran etc. So it is very well suited for our Nigerian climate.

SmartShield sunscreen is honestly unlike any other sun-protection I have used. When I see sunscreen all I think of is this HEAVY moisturizer that just sits on my skin making me hot and sweaty. This product is nothing like your regular sunscreen.

The main thing that stood out for me is that it's oil-free, rendering it perfect as a base for your makeup. It's got Vitamins A,C & E and also Aloe Vera, non-greasy, water-proof and absorbs into the skin fairly quickly.

I also decanted it into a little pot for my Mum to try as well, just so I could see how it worked with mature skin. My mum's got sensitive skin and she did not react to it at all. She used this on her neck, shoulders and arms, basically her upper-body that is usually exposed. She said it did not make her hot, sweaty and felt very natural on, just like her regular moisturizer. She used SmartShield in place of her moisturizer on that area of her body, just because she did not feel she needed the extra layer, sunscreen was enough.

It's got a nice 'clean' smell, hasn't got any perfume in it, feels very light-weight and non-greasy. I used mine slightly different from my Mum, I wanted to test this product as much as I could so I used it on my face under my makeup for a week straight. My skin is dry/sensitive so I was VERY nervous about having an adverse reaction to this product (the things I go through for you guys.. honestly), but thank God I didn't. My makeup stayed put all day, not sure if this will be the case for girls with a different skin-type from mine, e.g. Oily Skin

I only use a tiny amount on my face and then a bit more down my neck, across my shoulders and arms then on my legs. And I used it like this everyday, for the past two weeks. The picture on the left is roughly the amount of product I use on my face (I use like half of that) and the one on the right is the product worked into my skin. You can see, no white streaks! :)

SmartShield has a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30+, I did ask if it came any higher. It doesn't, but the percentage of coverage between SPFs isn't much. I found this information very interesting and wanted to share it with you guys :

SPF 15 = 92% protection
SPF 30 = 97% protection
SPF 40 = 97.5% protection
SPF 50 = 98% protection**

Yup, the sun-protection difference between SPF30 & 50 is just 1%

SmartShield can be purchased from the following places:,, Prince Ebeano Supermarket, Mophet Pharmacy and Medplus with many other locations still in the pipeline
Price: N2500 - N2800 depending on the store

I for one will definitely repurchase this, I am very happy with the product and it shall become my new daily sunscreen.

Happy Valentine's Beauty-Lovers! :)

So I was catching up on the lovely Vieve's blog and noticed in a beauty-haul she had purchased Ben Nye powder from a store in Lagos called 'Brownies'. I immediately sent her a message on twitter asking for deets of the store and she gave me the address as well as directions. Thanks a lot Vieve :) xx

My main purpose for visiting the store was to get my hands on the now infamous Ben Nye 'Banana' Powder, unfortunately this wasn't available.

Ben Nye Luxury Powder 'Nutmeg'

This was all they had left from the brand (apologies for the poor picture quality) and it was too dark for my skintone, but the lovely salesgirl mentioned they were expecting new stock in and promised to  give me a call when they landed in-store.

But my frown was soon turned upside down when I looked around the shop, and noticed they had quite a lot of E.L.F products on display.

I have been meaning to try-out products from this brand and had seen a few online retailers here in Lagos selling some of their products, but they had nothing I was interested in.

E.L.F which stands for Eye.Lips.Face is a very inexpensive makeup brand with products that are of very good quality. In the UK majority of their products range from 3.50-5.00 GBP.

I was very pleased that the mark-up on the items displayed in the store was not too high as is synonymous with nearly EVERY international makeup brand that is sold in Lagos. So annoying! I mean definitely include your costs when re-pricing your items, but sometimes these retailers take the piss.. Rant for another day.. Anyways...

After looking around here are the items I got

E.L.F. Mechanical Eyelash Curler - N1,000
The last time I used eyelash-curlers I was a teenager in my makeup experimentation stages, they were some pink plastic ones I got free in a magazine and weren't very good at all to be honest.

Been meaning to get the Shu Uemura ones, but when I saw these in the shop I decided to go for them because they are mechanical, just like Shu Uemura

It also came with an extra rubber insert for when the one already in place wears out.

I usually deep-clean my brushes every other week, using baby-oil to to take out all the makeup first and mild baby shampoo immediately after to wash. But most times, especially with my eyeshadow and liner brushes, I just want to do some on-the-spot cleaning between applications, these will be very handy.

It's got a pleasant smell and antibacterial which is an added bonus. I can see myself repurchasing these for sure!

I also picked up the E.L.F.  Eye-primer, but when I got home it was nowhere to be found. Guess I forgot to actually pay for it AND put it in my carrier bag *blonde*. I'll be visiting Brownies again, soon I'm sure, so I'll get it then.

MAC COSMETICS - Official Launch Party In Lagos

Hi Everyone!

So yesterday evening I had the pleasure of attending the Official Launch Party for MAC cosmetics in Nigeria! It was held at the Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel on Ozumba Mbadiwe Street in Victoria Island. The first of two branches (in Lagos) has already opened its doors to the public. It launched last weekend I believe, 2nd of February and its located in the Ikeja Mall. They are soon to open one on the Island at the Palms Mall in March/April.

The event setup was poolside by the lagoon. Now if you're reading this and you probably don't know Lagos, you'd think 'oooh what a lush setup'... ERRRR NO! When I realized the event was OUTSIDE I was like 'Oh hell NO'. It was soooo hot, honestly don't know why anyone bothers having an event or party outdoors in Lagos. But that didn't stop me from having a good time.... its MAC people and I was far too excited to be there!

They had a huge scribble-wall where anyone could write anything they wanted, thought that was a cool idea, its nice to get some sort of interaction going at events like this

So I got there a little late (read as: TWO hours late), honestly I'm late for everything. Even when I make a conscious effort to be on time, I always end up late one way or the other. I have learnt to just live with the fact that I will always be late.

Anyway, when I got there the lovely Tiwa Savage was on stage performing, I think they picked the perfect Artist for the event.

After her performance, the host of the event came back on-stage had an interactive session with the crowd and then DJ hit the decks, spinning some tunes while the guests milled around chatting. They had a little setup where MAC Makeup Artists were offering touch-ups and mini makeovers.

Best part of the night? The Gift-bag! and I was lucky enough to get two bags, so gave one to my Sister.

A lipstick and a Gift Voucher.

I was worried the lipstick would've been one I had in my collection, but it wasn't! Yey!

Its part of the 'Lustre' finish of MAC Lipstick family, which means it's not as opaque as the rest, but it doesn't take a lot to build it up. For me I think it coats the lips just fine and the color really stands out.

MAC 'Milan Mode'

It's like a sheer warm fuchsia pink with fine shimmer running through it. When I noticed the shimmer I was a bit like err, but the shimmer just adds a little dimension to the lips and its very very fine so you don't have that 'gritty' feeling when applying.

I think I'm going to love this color a whole lot and it will get a lot of wear. I tend to rock warm-toned lipsticks to the office, so this will join my collection of 'for-the-office' lipsticks.

I know MAC in Nigeria is going to be a huge success! The number of woman that love MAC here is ridiculous. I have been working part-time as a Beauty-Buyer the last few months and the demand for MAC is ridiculous, you won't believe the number of emails we get requesting MAC's 'Ruby Woo' lipstick. I know for a fact that I am not the only ridiculously excited that MAC's in Lagos.

Thanks MAC for throwing such a lovely party and WELCOME TO NIGERIA!!

Nail Paint By BARRYM

Hey Everyone,

In my first Manicure Mondays post, I received a couple questions asking where the BarryM store was located. There is a BarryM franchise in Lagos, I did mention this in my Lagos Makeup Fair Post here. (click on the link for store address and details)

My last trip to the store was in December and I picked up a few items, including their popular nail polish, or Nail Paint as BarryM likes to call them.

These are the colors I selected, as it was Christmas I was after some 'festive' options.

Nail Paint by BarryM '262 Bright Red'
Price: N1,200

I had been after a true Bright Red shade of nail polish and this one ticks all the boxes for me. Very pigmented and with subtle orange-undertones just enough to make it pop! This is the perfect red as far as I am concerned. It's like having MAC's 'Lady Danger' lipstick on your nails

Nail Paint by BarryM '273 Rasberry'
Price: N1,200

How GORGEOUS is this shade. It's a lovely wine/berry color,  just the right amount of pink and red mixed together.

Nice and dark, but not too dark. Just the perfect balance for a girly-girl like myself.

Nail Paint By BarryM '319 Foil'
Price: N1,600

I'm sure you recognize this from my Manicure Mondays - 001 post. This is a 'foil effect' nail polish (not to be confused with 'nail art foil'). BarryM also offer this finish in Gold.

I made two swatches of this just so you guys can see how opaque it is. One of the swatches I have applied just ONE coat and the other TWO coats. Let's play a little game shall we, which one's got two coats, the one on the left or right?... Please answer in the comment box below! :)

I will say that BarryM polishes are very opaque and the color in the bottle is what you get on your nails.  And for the price, it is well worth it!

Also for those of you guys that can't pop in to the BarryM store anytime soon and need to get your hands on some of their Nail Paint ASAP, online store have got a decent selection of BarryM polish, have a look here! (please note: the prices I have listed against each item is the store price, Konga's is slightly different)

So which is it, Left or Right?
