It’s safe to assume most of us have heard of essential oils. Whether it’s the Lavender Oil popularly touted by massage therapists as a great way to calm your nerves, or Tea Tree Oil for spot treating pimples, and there’s Rosemary Oil that haircare professionals will recommend to achieve fuller edges. So we’ve heard of them, but what exactly are Essential Oils?

An Essential Oil is an aromatic, volatile substance found within a plant. It is extracted from a particular part of the plant, like the flower, leaf, resin, bark, root, branch, seed or fruit. Within these oils, hundreds of organic constituents promote beneficial responses when applied or inhaled.

All essential oils are plant-based, and the method of extracting these oils defer depending on how best the oils can be extracted and retain their potency/effectiveness. However, the 3 main methods of extraction are: Steam Distillation, Cold Press & Solvent Extraction.

Now there’s another popular set of oils called ‘Carrier Oils’. Carrier Oils are actually skincare oils, you know your shea butter, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil etc. Carrier Oils are different from essential oils because they are extracted from nuts, seeds & kernels. Essential Oils, when exposed to air alone, tend to evaporate easily also applying it directly to the skin can potentially cause an adverse reaction, so diluting essential oils with carrier oils allows them to work better – better facilitates the absorption of the oil by the body.

Now that we have a basic understanding of Essential Oils, and the function of Carrier Oils as it relates to them, we will now explore some interesting uses of essential oils.

Essential Oils for Acne: Tea Tree Oil, Lavender Oil

Essential Oils for Aches & Pains: Mint Oil, Lavender Oil, Coconut Oil & Clove Oil

Essential Oils for Destressing: Ylang-Ylang Oil & Rose Oil

Essential Oils for Mental Boost: Frankincense Oil, Lavender Oil & Clarysage Oil

Essential Oils for Wounds & Cuts: Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary Oil, Lavender Oil

Essential Oils for Inflammation: Ginger Oil, Clarysage Oil & Lavender Oil.

Essential Oils for Aromatherapy: Sandalwood, Geranium Frankincense & Eucalyptus  Oils

Its no secret that the beauty industry hasn’t got the best track record when it comes to inclusion & diversity. However, thanks to these beauty influencers, all that is starting to change. In our opinion, the pace at which this change is happening could do with some ‘acceleration’, but slow progress is better than no progress at all.

The world of beauty influencers is vast but we’ve rounded up 4 ladies who are changing the beauty world by being themselves, showing off their creativity, dropping bomb content all while sending out a CLEAR message to the world which reads: We are here, and we are here to stay!

1). Jackie Aina

“Jackie Jackie Jackie Jackie…..”

With over 2.8 million subscribers on youtube and 1.1 million followers on instagram, queen Jackie is not only known for her wonderful make up skills but also for calling out makeup brands who don’t include enough darker shades in their product ranges. Jackie’s stance has always been the blatant under representation of people of colour within the beauty industry. From magazine campaigns to brand endorsements, foundation shade range to influencer giftings, she just wants people of colour to be able to relate with what they see in the mainstream media. Obviously her stance was met with MAJOR backlash, and even being blacklisted on some PR lists, but that didn’t stop our Jackie, although it was a slow climb Jackie is definitely closer to the top now, and has collaborated with famous brands like E.L.F. Cosmetics, Sigma Beauty & Artist Couture. Just recently, she was brought onboard by Too Faced Cosmetics to expand the range of their popular Born This Way Foundation range to include 11 new shades; 9 of which were formulated with Jackie’s input.

2). Patricia Bright

This U.K.-based vlogger has been in the YouTube game for quite some time. Patricia Bright has 2.6 million Subscribers on her YouTube channel, where she posts tons of reviews and tutorials and 980 thousand followers on Instagram. She comes off very honest and blunt in her review and includes a little bit of humour into her videos. She recently launched her own lipstick “Boss Babe” in collaboration with Mac Cosmetics and just added ‘Author’ to her many title, as she’s set to release a book: Heart and Hustle. She’s quite open about her personal life and regularly sharing adorable pictures of her beautiful family.

3). Peakmill

Peak Mill is the O.G. when it comes to hairstyling and wigmaking on YouTube. She was whipping up wigs long before they became super-acceptable like they are right now. She currently has 1.8 million people subscribed to her Channel and 680k followers on Instagram. Unlike our other faves, she is SUPER private when it comes to her personal life. Homegirl dropped not one, but TWO babies on us and we didn’t have a clue! We are definitely not mad at her for that, being a public figure is challenging on it’s own and we are definitely behind the notion: Not everything needs to be shared on the internet.

4). Shalom Black

Shalom Blac uses her platform to inspire and empower women. As a burn survivor she strives to get people to look past the exterior, yes she loves makeup, but she believes makeup only covers the external scars but internal scars are more important when it comes to healing. She uses her platform to show her viewers how she deals with and overcomes her insecurities, how people should be more compassionate and generally that we should all be more accepting of each others differences. She currently has 1.2 million viewers subscribed to her Channel and 654k followers on Instagram. Watch her latest post on “This is how extra I want to be in 2019

We at BeautyInLagos commend these amazing ladies and can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in 2019!

When it comes to products, who better to ask than the Experts? We are tired, TIRED, of our makeup not staying in place, shifting or just not lasting long enough on our face. Which is why we shamelessly slid into the DMs of a few of your Favourite MUAs to ask: What Makeup Primer is your Favourite. Once we hit send it was an excruciating wait to hear back from them. We immediately knew what it felt like to ‘shoot your shot’ with zero control over what happens next.

Lucky for us, they responded! *moon walk*

So, as recommended by Peace Ibadin, FacesByLabisi, Layefa Beauty, iMakeYouBeeliv, Bibyonce, Doranne Beauty & iAmDodos, here are 9 of the best primers that can withstand the Lagos heat. If it’s good enough for them, it sure as hell is good enough for us!

  1. Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Prime
  2. Hudabeauty matte perfection
  3. Becca Ever Matte Poreless primer
  4. Mac prep and prime
  5. Embryollise (apparently perfect for dry skin)
  6. Rimmel stay matte
  7. Illamasqua Matte Veil Primer
  8. Nars Pore & Shine control primer
  9. Makeup Forever Step 1 Primer

If you need to narrow it down to just 1 or 2, the Makeup Forever Step 1 & Becca Ever Matte Poreless seem to be the most popular amongst our Experts. And if you have dry skin, you might want to try out Embryollise.

BeautyInLagos also has a beauty directory, BeautyDirectoryNG. All the makeup retailers referenced above are listed on the directory. Our listing categories on the directory include: Makeup Artists, Beauty Product retailers, Beauty Service Providers, Spas & Hair Care & Extension retailers. Looking for something? Why not check:

If you’re a regular BiL reader/follower you should be familiar with The Nail Boutique! One of our favourite nail salons here in Lagos. We also previously featured them in our BiL Recommends series as one of our top spots to get a pedicure.

They recently moved locations, into a much bigger space, and we are LOVING their new loft-inspired vibe. With 8 Pedicure chairs, 6 Nail Tech stations and 4 nail-drying stations they’ve definitely upped the ante on the Mani-Pedi experience in Lagos. Check out the images:
