Another week, another pick! I have been enjoying this series so far, because at last I can finally recommend fantastic skincare products that are accessible. In the past nothing frustrated me more than not being able to answer questions about where to buy certain skincare products. I say ‘certain’ because I’m not talking about the usual drugstore products that are relatively easy to find out here, I’m talking about them ones you read up about from your favourite skincare guru and you’re itching to try it out but you can’t find it anywhere. HilarySays is shaping up to be a very reliable solution to that problem…. anyway, let’s get into this post.

Sun protection sun protection sun protection. I really do hope that there aren’t any regular BiL-readers that do not use Sunscreen, Sunprotection, SPF… whatever you call it. Most especially on your face, AND your entire body too. Irrespective of your skintone, Sunscreen is VITAL, ESSENTIAL, A PRIORITY! The myth that darker skin tones don’t need it, is just that… a MYTH. (Sidenote: that your Foundation which reads SPF15/SPF20/SPF50, that’s not going to cut it. Even face creams that claim to have some SPF, are not enough. You need to have a product in your stash whose primary function is Sun Protection. That’s a whole ‘nother discussion for another day….).

So if you haven’t got any Sun protection product on your top-shelf, allow me to make a recommendation (and it’s pretty amazing too)

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF60

This product provides broad-spectrum sun protection to oily, combination and acne-prone skin types. The dry-touch formula sets to a matte, weightless finish that doesn’t irritate skin or clog pores while the anti-shine complex absorbs excess oil throughout the day to prevent midday shine, even in hot, humid weather. Designed for daily wear, it protects your skin from aging UVA rays, burning UVB rays and damaging free radicals.

Key Benefits:

  • It does not leave a white cast which makes it ideal for dark skin
  • Anti-Shine complex: a combination of Perlite + Silica to absorb pore-clogging oil, even in heat and humidity.
  • Contains Cell-OX shield XL Technology that is an optimized combination of UVA/UVB filters chosen for its more synergistic effect to deliver broad-spectrum protection.
  • A powerful antioxidant complex to help protect skin from free radicals caused by UV rays that can cause premature skin aging.
  • Water resistant for up to 80 minutes.
  • Non-comedogenic formula won’t clog pores or cause breakouts.

 How to use:

Apply generously 15 minutes prior to sun exposure. Reapply at least every 2 hours or after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating.

Hilary Says….

The continuously depleting ozone layer has put us at a higher risk of getting affected from the harmful rays of the sun. While you do need the sun for your daily dose of Vitamin D, it does not imply that you should put your health at risk! Applying sunscreen actually blocks these harmful rays from penetrating the skin and triggering skin disorders. Never leave home without sunscreen; it is the most important skincare product you can ever use.

Remember in my last post about new online skincare store, Hilary Says, I mentioned I will be sharing a few products on their site that will be extremely beneficial for your skin, especially OUR skin and this climate.

One thing I swear by is exfoliation! Exfoliation is simply the process of getting rid of the dead skin cells usually on the surface. Not sure how many people STILL don’t know this, but your skin naturally ‘exfoliates’ itself every single day. You are basically shedding dead skin right now, it’s not obvious, but it’s happening. It usually takes about a month for the old skin to completely shed, but certain conditions like sun-damage, stress or aging can slow down the process. Exfoliation using products or tools is simply just aiding the process. All this isn’t really hidden knowledge, some ‘google-action’ and you are well on your way to fully understanding the human skin-shedding cycle.

Exfoliation is important to me because it’s the first step in ensuring that the other skincare products in my routine actually work. Think about it, how do you expect your product to penetrate your skin if there’s all this dead skin on the surface obstructing. Get the picture? So that’s why, to me, it’s the most important step otherwise you’re wasting your time with everything else.

With skincare products that exfoliate, there’s two types ‘mechanical’ or ‘chemical’. I prefer the chemical exfoliants and that’s why I’ve decided to share this incredible serum with you

Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos™ Glycolic Night Serum

A 12% AHA/BHA night serum that helps refine and resurface skin to reveal a smoother and more radiant looking complexion. T.L.C. Framboos enhances the performance of other products by clearing the way for maximum absorption. This high-tech gel resurfaces dull skin, gently lifting dead skin cells away by dissolving the glue that holds them to the surface. Fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration along with excess oiliness and pores will appear dramatically diminished.

  1. 12% blend of AHAs (glycolic, tartaric, lactic and citric acids) which exfoliate built-up dead skin cells, resurfacing dull, uneven skin.
  2. 1% Salicylic Acid which loosens sebum to unclog pores.
  3. A good mix of antioxidants a good mix of antioxidants like marula oil, green tea, horse chestnut, cactus, grape, raspberry extracts; which help fight off free radicals that cause damage to skin cells.
  4. Sodium Hyaluronate, which is a humectant that has a smaller molecular weight than hyaluronic acid and is able to deeply penetrate skin, delivering intense hydration, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while promoting firmness.

How to use:

At night, apply to a clean, dry face, neck, chest and backs of hands, avoiding the eye area. Note: Very slight tingling may be experienced, particularly for the first few days of application. This typically dissipates as your skin becomes adjusted. Start slowly.

Hilary Says…..

We recommend you use this product only at night. After cleansing and toning, apply on face, neck and chest, wait for a few minutes before applying other products.

As it has high levels of hydroxy acids, you may experience some tingling, this is normal. If you have never used products with AHAs and BHAs before,we advice you start by using the product 2/3 times a week, if it does not irritate your skin, you can start using every nice. Start Slowly. Make sure you use a sunscreen daily with this product.

When I type up posts like this, I can’t help but reflect on what the Nigerian Beauty Industry looked like when I started this blog 6 years ago. Like, I knew it had potential, but where it is now far exceeded my expectations. I started BeautyInLagos primarily to address the ‘Accessibility’ issue here in Nigeria and break the silly ‘Cycle Of Secrecy’; The “I don’t share where I get my beauty products, or treatments or fixes” *eye-roll*. That’s why I also created a Beauty Directory ‘BeautyDirectoryNG‘, a year after, so I could curate all these amazing discoveries in one place, so you don’t always have to search through blogposts to find a business I mentioned or reviewed. My intention with the Directory was to list businesses that were trustworthy and reliable. I am not so much concerned with the NUMBER of businesses listed as I am with the STANDARD of businesses listed. It’s always been quality over quantity for me. So when I was introduced to the Hilary Says website, I immediately knew this was the sort of business I wanted listed on BeautyDirectoryNG. ‘.

Founded by Hilary Rodriguez-Taiwo, who has a deep love and passion for beauty science, she created ‘HilarySays‘ to retail beauty products and also share the science behind it all. So the customer experience on the Hilary Says website goes beyond just purchasing a product but with the added key element of being educated on the right product to get  as well as the pros and cons of said product.

Pyunkang Yul Cleansing Foam – Available on the Hilary Says website N10,700

So you know when you’ve heard about this amazing skincare product, and then you want to get it but it’s a struggle to find and if you do find it you still want a bit more information about how exactly it performs and if it will work for you. Hilary Says website may just be the answer to that problem. Their aim is to help customers find answers to pressing beauty questions and recommend the best cosmetic products and procedures for your skin and hair. Most of the products sold on their site have been reviewed by the Hilary Says team and are based on breaking down the ingredients list of products using published scientific research, not by how the product feels on the skin. Their goal is to have all products sold on their site reviewed by their team, so you can shop in the knowledge that everything that arrives at your doorstep has been meticulously edited for quality

Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum – Available on the Hilary Says website N44,500

The Hilary Says online store stocks targeted beauty products, so if you are looking for a regular body moisturiser or shower gel, Hilary Says isn’t the site for that. They retail ‘Performance’ beauty products,as opposed to ‘Maintenance’ products. What’s the difference, you ask, well a product that treats acne, breakouts, protects your skin from the sun, etc. is classified ‘Performance’. Whereas your shower gel, shampoo, body moisturiser, products you use to maintain your skin  are ‘Maintenance’. I have decided to share some products I really think will be helpful and  address our most common skin issues, like hyperpigmentation & acne. So look out for those posts in the weeks to come, I may even be able to get you guys some money off the products I recommend. To kick things off, check out some pictures of a few products that caught my eye:

Stratia Liquid Gold – Available on the Hilary Says website N17,000

SkinMedica Age Defense Retinol Complex 0.5 – Available on the Hilary Says website N41,500

Paulas Choice Resist Skin Revealing 10% AHA Body Lotion – Available on the Hilary Says website N18,900

Hilary Says will be giving away the Stratia Liquid Gold Moisturizer to one very very lucky BeautyInLagos instagram. The giveaway rules will be announced on my Instagram page, @BeautyInLagos, tomorrow (Friday 2nd Feb). So keep an eye out!

If you are after a relaxing & rejuvenating spa experience, look no further than Oriki Lagos. I shared pictures of this gorgeous spa in an ‘Out & About‘ post on the blog some time ago, if you would like to see that post please click here.

I recently met a fellow blogger/influencer, Chi (@the_real_chi). She’s based out in New York and was in town for the holidays, I thought how fun it would be to show her some beauty spots here in Lagos and have her experience a typical Beauty In Lagos pamper day. I started off with a facial, then Chi met me for Mani-Pedis and we ended the day with an AMAZING spa experience at Oriki. We opted to get the Oriki ‘Triple Delight’ treatment.

The Oriki ‘Triple Delight’ is a 90minute all-over-body treatment…. pause….. yes, that’s a whole 1hour 30min pamper session! It comprises a 30min Scrub, 30 min Mask & 30 min Massage. Now that’s how they break it down to you, but let me tell you it’s a whole lot more than just a Scrub, Mask & Massage. Let me break down our entire experience for you..

The treatment started off with a 10min steam session in the steam room. So Chi and I were sat in the steam room completely starkers with just disposable panties on. Way to ‘bond’ no? lol. Ps: expect to be naked the entire treatment, they offer you disposable panties though. However,  they may accommodate a polite request to have a bikini top on, if you are like me and a bit uncomfortable with just anyone seeing you naked. I honestly don’t know what got into me, I was just a nudist for the day lol. Ok, so after the 10min steam session where Chi caught me up on some of what she’s been up to out here, we were then asked to lie face down on the spa bed, which was covered with like a clear plastic sheet,  and we were scrubbed down with a mixture that contained Sugar, Honey, Lemon & a special blend of oils. The pressure from the therapist was just right, we were scrubbed from the neck down to the soles of our feet, asked to flip over and same was done on the other side. All while laying down. After which the clear plastic sheet was wrapped round our bodies and then we were cocooned in the wrap with towels for 5mins. Then asked to rinse ourselves off in the shower using exfoliating mitts and an amazing Peppermint body wash that was from their in-house brand (oh, Oriki retail their own range of body & skincare products; and judging from the body wash, I’m very impressed).

Once we’d rinsed off the scrub, my skin instantly felt softer and I was already satisfied with the results, but there was more. We were asked to get back on the bed, a fresh clear plastic sheet had now replaced the old one. The therapist asked us to sit up, and then the mask was applied. Very warm, wasn’t expecting it to be warm, so that jolted me a bit but the temperature was just right. The mask was applied just like the scrub, from the neck down to the soles of the feet. And we were once again wrapped in the clear plastic sheet, but this time we were left for 20mins. I could feel myself sweating and the therapist said that exactly what was supposed to happen, riding my body of toxins. The mask mix included clay & seaweed amongst other things. After the 20mins was up, we were asked to rinse off and that was followed by an EXTREMELY relaxing 30min warm oil massage. It was so good, Chi fell asleep. Like asleep asleep, her therapist spent a few seconds trying to get her to wake up.

Oriki ‘Triple Delight’ Body Treatment – N21,000

From the smiles on our faces I don’t think you really need to know what we thought about the experience. But I’ll tell you anyway, it was AMAZING! My skin felt super soft! You don’t understand, by far the BEST spa experience I have EVER had in Lagos and I am honestly not just saying that.

I don’t just want to tell you guys about my time at Oriki, I also want you to experience it for yourselves.

Oriki kindly obliged to offer BiL Readers & Followers 30% off their ‘Triple Delight’ treatment.

Undeniably one of the finest, most exclusive fragrances in the world just recently launched at Montaigne Place. Each ingredient contained in every Roja fragrance is hand-selected for their rarity and unparalleled scent; formulated by one of the world’s most respected perfumers, Roja Dove. Montaigne Place has available, in store,  5 different collections from the Roja Parfums range: PROFUMI D’AMORE, IMPERIAL, TUTTI FRUTTI, THE GULF COLLECTION & ELYSIUM

Viking marks the prestigious Creed brand’s first major men’s scent since the introduction of the best-selling Aventus in 2010. Aventus was THE perfume for men at some point, pretty sure a lot of them still have it. So this will be the perfect addition to their Creed collection. It is a unique masculine and elegant fragrance, but can also be worn by women who love the appeal and unique blend of deep, rich wood, citrus and spice notes.

Inspired by the incredibly crafted longships, a centerpiece of the Viking Age and one of the greatest design feats of the ninth century. A symbol of voyage and undeniable perseverance, longships were carefully designed for the skilled seaman who embodied unbridled determination to conquer.

Top note:  Calabrian Bergamot, Sicilian Lemon, La Réunion Baie Rose (pink peppercorn)

Middle note:  Peppercorn, Bulgarian Rose, peppermint

Base note: Indian Sandalwood, Haitian Vetiver, Indian Patchouli, Lavandin Absolute

The Merchant of Venice is a niche fragrance brand created by Mavive. These amazing high-end perfumery line takes its inspiration from the precious essences and spices that the Venetian merchants of the past used to import from the main harbours of the world, via the Mude (sea routes), and subsequently traded them throughout Europe. Montaigne Place stocks a variety of scents from the Merchant of Venice brand, for both men and women: Murano Collection, Nobil Homo, Murano Art Collection, Murano Exclusive, The Museum Collection.

The Perfumer Kit Lux

There’s also an exclusive Perfumer Kit: a complete set of instruments and ingredients that affords the possibility of translating desires into fragrances by utilising two bases (50 ml each) and six facets (10 ml each); the facets contain different mixtures of essences, one for each main olfactory family. By following the manual supplied with the Perfumer Kit, users can create their own 20 ml Eau de Toilette and bottle them in the special spray purse.

The Murano Candle

How about a candle, the ideal expression of quality and refinement, and one specific to the intimacy of home. This dedicated collection was created to welcome guests in a distinctive and original manner, as well as affording them an unforgettable memory. The Murano Candle contains a mix of fragrances: Amber, Cashmere Wood & Orange Flowers.

These sublime fragrances are now exclusively available at select Montaigne Place outlets nationwide.

Lohn is a brand I recently discovered, their candles are 100% soy scented candles and hand-poured. I am quite sceptical when it comes to home fragrances in general: diffusers, oils, room sprays, candles etc. They hardly seem to be as intense as I’d like. I prefer the scent to fill the entire space and also linger for a while, one would think that with home fragrances that would be a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised.

Regular readers will know this about me, when it comes to products, I am a sucker for packaging and presentation. Lohn ticks ALL the boxes for me!

Just look at that! Won’t this make a perfect Christmas present for that scent-lover in your life? I wish more Nigerian brands paid attention to packaging, especially when you’ve included ‘luxury’ in your branding. Lohn get a 10 from me!

They offer quite a variety of scents in their range of candles, all different to suit different tastes and budgets. I loved their ‘Regal Collection’ made up of Gold Oud, Black Oud and White Oud scented candles. I went for the White Oud, and it smells absolutely amazing! Even when it’s not burning, and you walk past it, you catch a strong whiff.

Can you believe it’s already the end of November! The year 2017 is coming to an end, and the goal is to finish strong! Let’s give it one final P.U.S.H.

Anyways, there’s quite a few things I’ve been loving this month, some I may have already shared here on the blog/social media others I’ve had for a while but just never shared. So, here’s a few things I’ve been loving this Month…. and guess what? They can be purchased in the BiL Shop

I honestly don’t know why I hadn’t shared these little gems with you guys much earlier. I have been using heel stoppers since I attended a dear friend’s wedding back in 2014. She got married in South Africa, and right after the church ceremony while we all mingled and had cocktails on the estate grounds waiting for them to be done with pictures, the beautiful bride had ushers hand out heel stoppers to all the ladies and I thought they were the most genius things ever. I literally saved my pair for over 2 years after that wedding, until I misplaced one. Then I discovered I could get a pair from Tansey Simone, I was over the moon.

How I use them is: I pop them in my bag, when I am approaching my destination I slip them on and when I get indoors, take them off, straight in the little pouch and pop them right back in my bag. But that’s just me, I know people who keep them on the whole time (which is best, so you don’t misplace them like I did) or you could be like my Mum who’s got a pair of shoes that she keeps her heel-stoppers permanently attached to, she doesn’t take them off.

Please observe the sizes of the heels pictured, these heel stoppers are size Small; 0.9cm and stretch to 1.2cm. If you’ve got the skinny stiletto heels, these would probably be a little too big, these are for the standard heel size.

Finally some all-natural skincare products that actually pack a punch! I know a lot of people have started leaning more towards organic, natural skincare but I just wasn’t all the way there for it because the ingredients didn’t seem like they could do much for me. But let me tell you, Bath Kandy definitely did some research when it came down to the product ingredients in their latest venture, the Glow-Up Box.

The Glow-Up Box contains a Face Scrub, a Face Lotion that contains SPF and one super-souped-up  Beauty Elixir. The Beauty Elixir is packed with so much goodness, you’ll see in just a second.

Please can you just take a look at the ingredients in this Beauty Elixir! Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid & Glycolic Acid! Vitamin C is good for brightening, Hyaluronic Acid is for moisturising and Glycolic Acid gets rid of dead skin treating complexion issue (dullness, fine lines, scarring, etc.) Bruh! That’s one potent Elixir. The texture is more of a serum than an oil, which I like as it’s better to control. So far, my skin is LOVING this Elixir, but as with all things skincare, please do a patch-test before you use it all over your face.

This is a facial scrub made from Raw Cane Sugar, Raw Honey, Turmeric Butter, Palm Kernel Oil. The texture is creamy, and I love the fact that it’s got honey in it which has antibacterial benefits and also that the active ingredients are listed as the first 4 in the line-up. I’m sure everyone knows by now that the closer to the top an ingredient is listed, the more active it is in the product

This has got Oat Milk, Orange Butter, Argan Oil and Rosehip Oil. I LOVE Rosehip oil, it’s great for skin regeneration and improving the appearance of scars. In my nightime routine, my final step is an oil and these days, I alternate between the Beauty Elixir & Rosehip Oil. So the fact that this contains Rosehip Oil is definitely a plus, and it’s got SPF15.

It’s is a non-greasy, soothing and lightweight formula that is to be worn during the day, underneath your makeup.

Lord, this Nail polish! I am absolutely in LOVE with this shade of polish, almost wish I didn’t have to share a fresh manicure every week. It’s just the perfect colour for the season! And since I shared it in this Manicure Monday’s post here, I received comments on Instagram, Email & Snapchat asking where they could get their hands on a bottle. Well, at the time of that MM post, Vane had sold out of it, but I managed to get a couple bottles to sell in the BiL Shop, so grab one before it sells out.
