I know most of us wish we could just use one serum and that’ll solve all our skincare issues, but sadly that’s not the reality. Which is why we have decided to collaborate with one of our BiL Contributors to create a mini educational series all about Serums!

I can say one of the Top Five questions I get is: “What can I use for my acne and/or pigmentation”?

My answer is always the same:
One product may not be the answer

Olabisi (BiL Contibutor)

The problem now lies in when to use what and what works well together. Obviously, some serums come as a combination and are effective but from experience especially with pigmentation, it’s best to layer.

Before we get into all the juicy details about what to layer with what, there are 8 important things to note:

  1. Higher percentage doesn’t mean it will work faster
  2. Start low, go slow.
  3. Pick and mix based on your skincare concerns
  4. Limit to a maximum of 2 to avoid clogging your pores.
  5. When we say layering we mean just serums. Sunscreen is a given and moisturiser may be optional for some
  6. Start from the thinnest to the thickest consistency. Sometimes a product may say serum on the bottle and be watery like a toner or thick like a moisturiser.  This will help you avoid “pilling” (where your product rolls up into balls on your face)
  7. Always do a patch test
  8. Take note of what you combined in case you get an adverse reaction.

Please take these precautionary notes very seriously, as they will guide a lot of the advice you will receive in these series.
