Before we get started I have a question for you. Does it feel like you are doing everything right and your skin is still acting up?

Do you have dryness, redness, or irritation – it could be more than the wrong products or breakouts, but a compromised skin barrier instead.

So let’s discuss what it is and how to make it better.

What is the Skin Barrier?

The skin barrier, often referred to as the “epidermal barrier,” is a crucial component of the skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis. It serves as a protective shield that helps prevent harmful substances, such as bacteria, viruses, and pollutants, from entering the body, while also retaining moisture and essential nutrients within the skin. It is made up of dead cells and oils and keeps out bacteria & irritants, while locking in good stuff like moisture.

Think of your skin barrier as your skin’s shield and protection from the outside world.

Signs your barrier needs help:

  1. Dryness, and Flaking
  2. Increased Sensitivity
  3. Irritation
  4. Redness and Inflammation
  5. Itchy or Stinging Skin

Top Causes of Barrier Damage

  1. Overwashing- using harsh soaps or washing your skin multiple times a day for the ‘’squeaky clean ‘’ feeling is a recipe for a damaged skin barrier.
  1. Overuse of exfoliators: AHAs , BHAs and other active ingredients are great when used in moderation, when overused they remove the protective layer of your skin.
  2. Environmental Factors: overexposure to sunlight or even pollution can affect your barrier function.

Here are 3 steps to repairing your skin barrier:

  1. Stop all actives – ditch any products that contain actives or fragrance.
  2. Hydration is Key:  Look for products with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and occlusive ingredients like petrolatum to lock in moisture.
  3. Sunscreen Every Day: Protect your skin from UV rays with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen.

Do that consistently and your skin will thank you. Want a more detailed breakdown of which products to use to get your skin back to its normal healthy state my book  _  How to Repair a Damaged Skin Barrier is the place to start
