A few months ago, I shared that I’d suffered from Hyperhidrosis pretty-much all my life, and didn’t even really know it. You can read more about that in this post here: What is Hyperhidrosis – My Story. In that post, I shared all about the different treatments available for Hyperhidrosis, and I myself went on to get one of them…. Botox.

I got my Botox injections done at Laserderm Clinics and I cannot recommend them enough. My treatment was administered by their Aesthetics Consultant, Dr. Mobola Savage, who was so knowledgeable and patient with all my questions.

In this post I am going to give a full review of my treatment and also a little update on how things are currently going at 5 months post-treatment. But first things first… What is Botox?

Botulinum Toxin (BoTox) Treatment

Botox is usually considered a last option for those who have experienced hyperhidrosis and have tried treating with other options. A very common treatment option for hyperhidrosis is the application of anti-perspirants, however after a while these have been considered ineffective for most patients.

Botox injections are most successful when hyperhidrosis is confined to one area of the body and the procedure is simple to administer.  The Botox drug is known to temporarily block the nerves that cause sweating. With the skin anaesthetised first, the affected areas are cleaned and injected.

The body will require several injections according to recommended dosage. The effects of Botox can last up to 6 – 12 months with minimal bruising, swelling, or tenderness felt immediately after the procedure.

Patients typically begin to experience results in five days, with full results visible after two weeks.
Botox treatment is known to be effective and considerably (depending on individual) long-lasting. It is also relatively painless and preferred because it is less invasive than surgery.

The Consultation

I had an initial consultation with Dr. Savage, literally right before my procedure. She shared on how exactly Botox works to reduce excessive swelling, how long the effect lasts and how painful the procedure was going to be. If you want to know the answers to these questions and more, there are two Q&A style videos in the ‘Reels’ section of the BeautyInLagos Instagram page, here’s a direct link: Q & A With Dr. Mobola Savage

The Treatment

The first thing done was the application of some numbing cream, this was applied to both underarms and then cling-filmed. They were left on for 30-45mins. Once the time was up, Dr. Savage, wiped it off and then dabbed on what seemed to be Gentian violet, all over my underarms. This started to reveal the areas where I sweat excessively helping her pin-point where exactly to administer the Botox injections. I’m only guessing it was gentian violet because it went on yellow, then turned purple, was a bit of a nightmare to get off and left a yellow stain as you can see in the image below. She wasn’t just shooting blindly, but took the time to carefully to map-out which areas to target.

Once all that was done, then the actual injecting started. Let me tell you, it was painful and I have got a high pain thresh-hold! Painful, but definitely bearable. There were some areas that were completely numb, and I did not feel a thing, but there were equally some spots that were so painful. For me, it was the repeated ‘inject and withdraw’ action that I couldn’t stand. Literally couldn’t wait for it to be over. I’d say the entire procedure for both underarms lasted 20-30mins.

There’s also another video in the Reels section of our social media page where I have documented my full procedure: My Botox Treatment For Hyperhidrosis

Post-Treatment

I did have some significant bruising especially in my right underarm. It was this large area that went from dark purple, to light purple and then green. Asides, that there wasn’t any pain AT ALL after the treatment.

Results

I would say I started seeing results as soon as 2-3weeks after. With more significant results happening right now at 5months post-treatment.

This treatment has literally changed my life. I no longer need to be cautious of the type of clothing I wear or buy, I am now able to wear items I could never even dream of wearing out in public. It’s amazing to think just how much hyperhidrosis did affect my quality of life.

If you were thinking of getting Botox to treat hyperhidirosis, I would definitely recommend getting a consultation done at Laserderm Clinics. My entire experience was great and I really felt like I was in good hands.
