RED CARPET MAKEUP TIPS & TRICKS FROM THE PROFESSIONAL

The saying goes: “If you want to know what your favourite celebrity really looks like, go check out their raw red carpet images”

The cameras that line celebrity red carpets can be so unforgiving. One can but imagine the immense pressure the Glam Team goes through to ensure their client looks near-perfect on that carpet.

So how exactly do they do it? How does the makeup artist prevent their client’s makeup from melting off their face or flashback?

Well, we decided to ask a professional and went behind the scenes with Award-winning, celebrity makeup artist, Theodora Mogo of @DoranneBeauty, as she got her clients ready for the recent Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards. We asked her best red-carpet makeup tips and tricks to get, and keep, that makeup looking flawless.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PREP

Theodora says no matter how high-end/luxurious your makeup products are, if the skin isn’t prepped right you might as well not bother. She compares it to constructing the must architecturally magnificent building on a weak foundation, it’ll soon come crumbling down. For her, the key is to get the skin right BEFORE applying any makeup.

The first step in prep is all about moisture. The skin needs to well moisturised, not drenched. Even if your skin-type is oily, do not skip moisturiser. You can have oily-skin can also be dehydrated (to learn more on the difference between oily and hydrated skin, click here). Be sure to gently massage the moisturiser into the skin, taking your time to work it in, until skin is supple and calm. Her go-to product for this is Embryolisse Face Cream & Makeup Primer

Primer: is the product that acts as a barrier between the skin and all that makeup about to be applied, and this isn’t somehing you shouldn’t scrimp on. There’s a variety of primers on the market formulated to suit different skintypes. Her primer of choice is Huda Beauty

Illuminator: To achieve that ‘glow-from-within’ look, a liquid/cream illuminator like xxxx, will do the trick.

Loose Powder: Applying some loose setting-powder to the face, right after the illuminator and just before Foundation, will help prevent the oils seeping through the makeup and also acts as an extra priming-base.

Hydrating Spritz: Remember it’s all about hydration, spritzing some hydrating spray between layers of makeup as you work through applying primer, concealer, foundation will prevent the makeup from caking and that dreaded ‘flashback’. She recommends the hydrating mist by Mario Badescu

Contour: Understanding the client’s faceshape , some gentle contouring round the face and across the cheeks will bring back some definition that was lost during the makeup application process, and warm up the face.

Finally some good quality, super-hold setting spray to seal it all in and keep that makeup looking flawless all day. Her go-to setting spray is Charlotte Tilbury
